Emma King - October Newsletter

For your convenience, we've provided the content from our September newsletter in plain text below.

Message from the Office

As we move into October, we would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been an exciting and successful start to the school year. September has been filled with energy, learning, and opportunities to reconnect as a school community. We are incredibly proud of how well our students and staff have adapted to the new school year.

One of our most significant changes was the addition of a new Grade 5 class. This required a reorganization of our Grades 4-8 classes, and we appreciate the flexibility and understanding shown by students, families, and staff throughout the process.

We are also looking forward to welcoming families to our upcoming Open House. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit classrooms, connect with staff, and celebrate the learning that is already underway. We hope to see many families join us for this event.

Our school construction project continues to make steady progress, and it is exciting to see the transformation taking shape. We remain hopeful that the addition to the west wing of the school will be ready to open in the new year, providing new learning spaces for our school.

As always, thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. We wish all of our families a happy and healthy October.

Alison Golding and Warren Kirwan

School Council

The Emma King School Council is looking to welcome more members from our school community. We are a great group of parents, guardians, and community members who are interested in supporting our school and helping it continue to thrive.

We typically meet monthly on the first Monday of most months at the school. Attendance at every meeting is not required, and you do not need to be a voting member to participate. Everyone is welcome to attend and share their ideas.

Our first meeting is October 5th at 6pm in the school library. Those interested in becoming a voting member should return the completed nomination form to the office by October 2.

Halloween

On Friday, October 30, students are welcome to wear a costume, dress in black and orange, or wear their regular clothing.

If your child chooses to wear a costume, please keep the following in mind:

Ensure all costume pieces are clearly labelled with your child's name.

Consider leaving small accessories and valuable items at home, as they can easily be misplaced, especially by younger students.
Face masks are not permitted, as students need to be easily identified throughout the day.

Costumes must not include weapons or weapon replicas of any kind.

Please choose costumes that are respectful and inclusive and do not imitate or stereotype cultures, religions, races, or identities.

Costumes should allow students to participate safely and comfortably in learning activities, recess, and physical education.

Avoid costumes with excessive gore, blood, frightening imagery, or themes that may be upsetting to younger students.

Students should be able to manage their costume independently when possible.

We look forward to a fun and safe Halloween celebration for all students! Thank you for your support in helping make the day enjoyable for everyone.

Immunizations

All Grade 7 students are once again being offered three free vaccines through the health unit’s school immunization program. These vaccines include: Hepatitis B (Hep B), Human Papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) and Meningococcal. The clinics for these three vaccines are being scheduled for Grade 7 students starting this fall.

While all three vaccines are strongly recommended by the health unit, Meningococcal vaccine is required by law, under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), for school attendance. More information will be sent home prior to the school clinic for review by parents and students. For more information about routine vaccinations, visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Grade 7 Immunization Program page.

Has your child already received their routine immunizations?

As a parent or guardian, you are required to report your child’s immunizations to your local public health unit if your child attends school. The following are required immunizations:

• Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Pertussis (whooping cough)

• Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella - must have two doses after the first birthday

• Meningococcal Disease

The health unit does not receive immunization information directly from doctor’s offices. Please update your child’s immunization record every time your child receives a vaccine from their health care provider by completing the secure electronic form on our website at smdhu.org/immsonline.

What you can do: Check – your child’s yellow immunization card Contact – your child’s health-care provider to obtain records, or to get missing vaccinations

Share – go to smdhu.org/immsonline to enter the complete record or fax a completed record to 705-726-3962.
